"Light and Movement in Paintings"
With JOHN DAVID ANDERSON
Spend a day with John David Anderson, who describes himself as a
Canadian contemporary impressionist. To use his words, contemporary
because he is alive and impressionist because that is a good description
of his paintings. JohnDavid likes to paint alla prima (all in one session),
perfect for a workshop, to keep the painting fresh, loose, colourful and
gestural.
Experience the character of the light and the compositions that flow
from the pathway of light through a space. JohnDavid paints tonally with
rich colour and an impressionist character. He is not driven by the subject
but by the light. Learn how to convey movement. Learn how to use fluctuating
emphasis of light and shadow along with the use of hard and soft edges to
enhance movement.
The demonstrations will be conducted using oil paints. However, participants
may bring the painting medium of their choice. JohnDavid paints in both
oils and acrylics.
JohnDavid is a resident of Stayner and is an award-winning artist and teacher.
He conducts many workshops, including teaching in the summer program at the
Haliburton campus of Fleming College. He manages a fine arts store in Barrie.

"Play in Clay"
with ANNE JORDAN
This is not a workshop for experts and advanced ceramicists, but a
beginner's workshop in which we can explore together how to work in
clay to create sculptured busts of people. Get the feel of clay,
learn how to mould it into shapes. Learn how to form and sculpt a head to
make a likeness of someone you know, - or someone you don’t know from
a photo or your imagination. This workshop is intended to be a day of fun
doing something different, although more experienced potters are welcome.
The day will start with a discussion and a demonstration of clay and
how to prepare it, together with a video of an expert who demonstrates
sculpting basics. However, most of the day will be spent working with clay.
Anne has been involved in pottery for more than 10 years, and has
taken numerous courses at Fusion in Toronto and Canadore College
in North Bay. She has a potters wheel and a kiln for firing pottery.

"Plein Air Painting"
With George Perdue
Come and spend a another day painting plein air i.e. in the open air. This
year the location has a garden with trees and flowers. The house has a
turret, front porch and a widows walk; it is a challenge in perspective.
Plein air painting is very different from painting in a studio or using
photographs as references. It is a wonderful way to learn to see and
paint that compliments other forms of life painting practices such
as still life, portraiture and figure work.
George will explain approaches to plein air painting, including how to
simplify a scene to obtain the essence of what it was that attracted you
i.e. your concept, to lock in the light and dark values, and use of a
limited palette. There will be discussion on learning to see and
this will include basic concepts of perspective which inhabit all
forms of painting.
Nonetheless, the day is primarily directed at giving you time to paint;
there will be plenty of time to do one or more paintings. George will be
there to offer guidance. He will also provide a value guide, a practical
colour wheel, a concept sheet and a short summary handout for plein air painting.
George is an experienced plein air painter and has conducted a number of
courses in plein air painting. His previous four workshops for the
OAG were very successful; this workshop is at a new location with
different challenges, and there is a lot of subject matter to tempt you.
This workshop is open to all media e.g. oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel,
drawing.
When: Sunday 27 May 2012
Time: 10am until 4pm
Place: The gardens/grounds around 12 Faulkner Street, Orangeville.
The house is a Victorian with a picket fence at the corner of McCarthy
and Faulkner in Orangeville. Faulkner is parallel to and one street west
of First Street, and McCarthy is the third street north of Broadway
(the house is close to ODSS and the Tony Rose Arena).
Parking is on the south side of McCarthy west of Faulkner
(there is no parking on Faulkner).

"Exploring Techniques to Loosen Up Your Work"
with MERV RICHARDSON
Watercolour is a wonderful, exciting medium. Merv Richardson likes to express architectural
and landscape subjects in a manner which stretches a representational viewpoint by means
of a spontaneous, intuitive approach to his work.
The day will begin with an introductory talk on the making of and methods used in painting
in watercolour. This will be followed by a step-by-step demonstration. There will be time
for you to paint, with individual help and critique from Merv.
We will explore several techniques used to achieve the goals of the workshop. These
include working wet in wet (how to control shapes on a slippery surface); building a
finished painting upon a splattered abstract background; and using a slick method to
paint trees, working with negative shapes.
There will be a demonstration to start both the morning and afternoon sessions,
with time set aside for a critique to finish up. Individual help may include
personalized mini-demos to reinforce a concept.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own reference photos and sketches.
Copies of some of his sketches will also be provided for use in the workshop as well.
Participants in the workshop should have some knowledge of painting with watercolours.
Bring all of your regular supplies for painting in watercolour; there is a suggested
(not essential) supply list (below).
Merv Richardson has been painting in watercolour since 1977. Merv is a member of The
Canadian Society of Painters In Watercolour (CSPWC). He teaches all levels of
students and instructs at workshops throughout Ontario. Merv has served frequently
as a juror for art shows.
