"Put Light into Flowers” with SUSAN CHATER

Come and learn from an accomplished painter of flowers in watercolour. Learn how to add the light into flowers, and make them vibrant and enticing. Find the “wow” factor. Everyone has access to flowers, and it is a great subject to paint any time of the year.

The day will begin with an introductory talk on the making of and methods used in watercolour paintings to add the light by adding vibrant darks, and allowing the magic of watercolour pigment to work on your behalf. This will be followed by a demonstration. Since the technique is learned by doing, you will then have an opportunity to put this into practice. While there will be brief demonstrations during the remainder of the day, it will be primarily directed to time to paint with individual help and critique from Susan.

Participants in the workshop should have some knowledge of painting with watercolours. Bring all of your regular supplies for painting in watercolour. Susan will bring a supply of her preferred paper for you to try.

Susan has always had a passion for painting and has been teaching for 12 years, including at the Southampton Art School. . She is a Signature member of the Toronto Watercolour Society and in 1997 was elected a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. ‘TAKE ANOTHER STAB AT KNIFE PAINTING”

with CAROL GREGG

Take a break from painting with brushes. Spend a day with Carol and paint with palette knives. Renew your acquaintance with palette knives, or meet them for the first time. Expand your painting horizons and techniques, but be warned – your painting may never be the same again, with more ways to express what you seek to convey. Loosen up, learn freedom of expression in your painting, get away from those small paint brushes.

Carol Gregg has been a member of the OAG for 15 years, and she has learned to love to paint with palette knives. This one day workshop will introduce (or re-introduce) you to the use of palette knives, or expand the horizons of those with experience, and activate the creative juices. Carol will explain and demonstrate a variety of techniques of using a palette knife, and advantages/disadvantages of different shapes of knives. Most of the day will be devoted to painting with palette knives.

A still life will be set up, but feel free to bring along photographs or other visual material.

‘PORTRAITURE”
with DAVID CHESTERTON

This workshop will cover material in the portraiture workshop in 2010, and build on the teachings of that workshop.

Portraiture can be intimidating. Humans tend to be defensive about portraits, but take heart; most people don’t really know what they look like, apart from the distortions of a mirror or camera.

The workshop will include the basic structure and proportions of the head, with handouts. David will then build upon those teachings. There will be a model, and as participants will be in an arc around the model, each person will have a different perspective; your painting will be unique. A good likeness should be achievable during the workshop, but bring a camera so that the portrait may be finished afterwards. David’s teachings will be applicable to all media but demonstrations will be in watercolour.

David started life drawing at the age of 13 and created portraits of the Queen for local stores at the time of the Coronation. He did many portraits of senior officers in the RAF. For ten years he was a member of the Head Hunters, a group in Newmarket who met weekly to do portraiture. He has sketched and painted with many known artists, including A.J. Casson. After working in graphic design, he taught Colour and Creativity in community colleges for 25 years. He has been a member of the OAG for many years.

When: Saturday MARCH 5, 2011
Time: 10am – 4pm
