"WATERCOLOUR – The Agony and Ecstasy II"
with DOUGLAS BROWN
Saturday 24 August 2013
Come and learn from an accomplished painter of landscapes and townscapes in
watercolour. Doug is a strong believer that painting should be fun, and that
greater skills and success go together to provide more enjoyment when you are
painting. This is a great chance to add to the fun of painting. This workshop
is particularly directed to creating atmosphere, especially fog and rain,
and how to use light to show the time of the day in your paintings.
Learn how to avoid the ordinary and add character and impact to your paintings.
The day will begin with a brief introductory talk on the making of and
methods used in watercolour paintings. There will be demonstrations of
creating atmosphere and of using light to indicate the time of day. You
will have an opportunity to put this into practice between and after the
demonstrations. The day will be primarily directed to time to paint and
practice what was in the demonstrations with individual help and critique
from Doug.
Participants may bring in a painting for a critique if time permits.
Participants in the workshop should have some knowledge of painting with watercolours.
Born and educated in Toronto, Doug is a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Toronto, and has taken numerous classes at the Ontario College of Art. Doug’s career was in architecture, but many weekends and vacations were spent painting and sketching. Retirement provided more time to devote to family, travel and other activities, including painting in watercolour. He has exhibited in numerous locations including in Toronto, Alliston, Alton and Creemore. He received both the Juror’s choice and Peoples’ choice awards in a show of the Toronto Watercolour Society.
When: Saturday 24 August 2013

"WORKING FROM PHOTOGRAPHS"
with LINDA JENETTI
Saturday 7 September 2013
Most artists paint from photographs of places they have been. Nonetheless
photographs are notorious for not providing information that is available
if a painting is done on location (plein air). Learn how to go from a
photograph to a painting, and how to approach the challenges in doing so.
Linda will also discuss different techniques to increase and improve an
individual’s style. Are you ready for a fun and informative workshop that
will teach you how to get your memories onto canvas.
Emphasis will be on composition, depth, form, content and overall execution.
And lots of time to paint and practice.
The day will begin with a brief informal lecture and demonstration, very
motivating and opening up new and fresh possibilities within your painting
practice. There will be on-going individual critiques and guidance.
The workshop is primarily directed to oil painting but other media are welcome.
The use of organic solvents is discouraged. You can use non-toxic solvent
(not turpentine) but make sure it is in a tightly lidded container and for
use only to clean brushes when they are too muddy.
Bring some of your own photographs for use in the workshop. Other materials
are listed below.
Linda Jenetti is a local area artist and is a past Secretary of the OAG.
She started painting at a young age, attended OCA (OCAD), Vancouver School of
Art and the Artists Workshop art school in Toronto. Her studio (Tote Hole Studio)
is part of the North of 89 Studio Tour.
When: Saturday 7 September 2013
Time: 10am – 4pm
Where: Victoria Parks Community Centre, Mono Mills
(west side of Airport Road; from Hwy 9 turn south on Airport Road and then
turn right at the first street (Calmon Drive) and immediately right onto

"Loosen up Representational Paintings"
with MERV RICHARDSON
Saturday 26 October 2013
Watercolour is a wonderful, exciting medium. Merv Richardson frequently gets comments from artists about working in a looser manner. This workshop will demonstrate a method to achieve this goal, working with mop brushes to develop luscious, vibrant watercolours full of personal interpretation and content. Stretch a representational viewpoint by means of a spontaneous, intuitive approach to the painting.
The day will begin with an introductory talk on the making of and methods used in painting in watercolour. This will be followed by a step-by-step demonstration of the use of mop brushes. There will be time for you to paint, with individual help and critique from Merv. Individual help may include personalized mini-demos to reinforce a concept.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own reference photos and sketches. Copies of some of Merv’s sketches will also be provided for use in the workshop as well.
Participants in the workshop should have some knowledge of painting with watercolours. Bring all of your regular supplies for painting in watercolour; there is a suggested (not essential) supply list (below). Please note that for this workshop you will need small and medium sized mop brushes. Suggested sizes are both a #1 and a #6, preferably of natural hair but synthetic rounds are a second choice
Merv Richardson has been painting in watercolour since 1977. Merv is a member of The Canadian Society of Painters In Watercolour (CSPWC). He teaches all levels of students and instructs at workshops throughout Ontario. Merv has served frequently as a juror for art shows.

"Making Fall Colours Work"
With JOHNDAVID ANDERSON
Saturday January 18, 2014
Spend another day with JohnDavid Anderson, who describes himself as a Canadian
contemporary impressionist. His workshops in 2012 and 2013 were great
successes, with waiting lists. JohnDavid paints tonally with rich colour

workshop, to keep the painting fresh, loose, colourful and gestural.
This workshop is directed to how to make fall colours work in a landscape.
Learn how to choose colours to depict the fall landscape, and to achieve balance,
impact and success in the painting. Learn how to do so, and get to better

oils and acrylics.
JohnDavid is a resident of Stayner and is an award-winning artist and
