President's Message

It has been a beautiful fall. I hope that your creativity has flourished and you were able to enjoy it to the fullest.

You may have considered the activities offered by the Orangeville Art Group. If you were absent during 2011, we missed you. If you participated, I hope that you enjoyed the following as much as I did;

  • Our 42nd Annual Fall Show and sale which was successful on many different levels
  • The enthusiasm and social camaraderie at Temptations Bistro during the changeover of art
  • At the Lord Dufferin Centre, the emotional rewards gained from the "give back to the community"
  • At Workshops, the exploration of new ideas and the improvement of skills
  • After the changeover of Art, the evening of "Meet the artist" and the "$100 sale" at the Library
  • Seeing the OAG photos and our name in newsprint

Previously, I expressed my sincere appreciation to all the member volunteers whose art was at the focus and whose efforts, made our 42nd event quite a success. Your Executive is very proud and encouraged by the team planning, volunteering and participation which resulted in a Cultural Award from the Town of Orangeville as well as an actual profit!

We tried some new things for which we collected data. During our wrap up review, we documented task descriptions in order to make It easier for the next time. Most importantly we found that our Sponsors were key, including:

  • the improved relationships established within the business community
  • our appreciation for the contributions made by our Major Sponsors Orangeville Honda and Scotiabank.

In addition, please review the list of all Sponsors of the OAG http://www.orangevilleartgroup.ca/contact.html . Should you have the opportunity or wish to consider their business, please express your appreciation for their important role and service to OAG.

In our efforts to improve our ability to meet your needs, recently we have sent two surveys to the members. One is regarding Workshops and the other is regarding Volunteering within the OAG. We appreciate your input. This "thank you" may be concurrent or may be in advance of your kind and valuable replies.

As the OAG approaches a new year, I encourage you to reflect on my "Wanted.... We need you". Coordinators are needed. Volunteers can be a great asset to the health and are the backbone of an organization. For the OAG, I would like to end with a quote which is found on many websites of volunteer organizations. "Volunteers don't get paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are indeed priceless."

Doreen and I look forward to seeing you and wish you and your loved ones the very best of the Festive Season.

 Wanted....We Need You

In addition to numerous accomplishments last year, the OAG Executive successfully handled three significant people challenges:

  • 3 members had to resign from their executive duties because of family crisis or illness
  • New activities arose which needed attention
  • No member volunteered to chair the 42nd Annual Fall Show and Sale

You can appreciate that many members of the Executive had to do double duty. Currently, the Executive:

  • Is coping with these continuing people challenges
  • Seeks additional volunteers now
  • Would give support and guidance to the volunteers in order to benefit future OAG activities.

Please review the following brief information and earnestly consider learning more about these important Coordinator roles.

Dear Member,

Welcome to the pre-holiday December edition of the Sketchbook! We have had a number of successful shows in the last few months; the largest of them was our 42nd Annual Show and Sale. In addition, we organized Meet the Artist events at Lord Dufferin Center and at the Library as well as the regular Library rotation and Holiday sale. At this point, we are looking forward to focusing on our families and friends, enjoying the holidays and planning for the New Year. So take a few minutes to learn what's going on and what's being planned for early 2012. We look forward to hearing from you, seeing you at the new workshops and showcasing our works of art together!

Jean Anne Hardy

1944-2011

"I just love watercolour"!

Jean Hardy, a deeply committed and much loved member of the Orangeville Art Group, passed away on November 3rd 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer. An outstanding watercolour artist, many of you will have personal memories of Jean as a teacher, mentor and friend. For example President, John Walsh recalls how he ran over to her home to ask for help to paint figures in order to complete a watercolour painting of his grandsons. For many of us Jean had a gift of making all those who met her feel special, talented and valued.

Jean painted out of Dragonfly for a while, conducted classes at Maggiolly's and in her home, and displayed her work in galleries and display locations throughout Orangeville and central Ontario. She served on the OAG executive, and even as her health declined, had a hand in improving the OAG displays in Headwaters hospital.

We will certainly miss her wit, encouragement and cheerful interest in those around her, as well of her love for her watercolour medium and for sharing it with us.
